MacroMind Accelerator, formerly VideoWorks Accelerator, was a utility provided by MacroMind (the predecessor of Macromedia) to process Director and VideoWorks files for faster playback on slower computers.[1]
Features
VideoWorks Accelerator was first released in 1988 as a separate utility for VideoWorks II users.[2] It pre-composited graphical elements into a single streaming file that could be loaded and played back from memory at up to 30 frames per second.[1]
It was renamed MacroMind Accelerator in 1989 with support for encoding and accelerating Director files.[1] It was later bundled with MacroMind Three-D in 1991 and MacroMind Director 3.1 in 1992.[3][4] Accelerator was discontinued as the release of QuickTime from Apple Computer and Video for Windows from Microsoft made it redundant.
