Adobe FrameViewer, formerly FrameReader, was an read-only application for viewing FrameMaker documents. This functionality has been succeeded by Adobe Acrobat Reader since PDF has become Adobe's official document exchange format.
Product history
FrameReader 1.0 was released by Frame Technology for Windows in 1992 and 24 Unix platforms by 1993. It could navigate hyperlinks in documents as an early competitor to Adobe Acrobat.[1][2][3] FrameReader 3.0 could read files from both FrameMaker 3 and 4 as the file format was interchangeable.[4]
In June 1995, Adobe Systems agreed to buy out Frame Technology for $500 million.[5] The last version from Frame Technology was 5.0 in September 1995.[6] The acquisition by Adobe was completed in October 1995.[7] The first rebranded version was Adobe FrameViewer 5.1, which shipped on February 13, 1996.[8] The Windows version of 5.1 was still branded Adobe FrameReader at the time.[9]
Adobe FrameViewer 5.5, released on September 2, 1997,[10] was the last version for Macintosh. Adobe FrameViewer 6 for Windows and Unix was the final version.
